Where are you from?

Montréal, Québec

Can you tell me about a moment in DxD when you heard a perspective that challenged your own assumptions? What happened, and what did you take away from it?

What I love about DxD is that I am always hearing perspectives that challenge my assumptions.

In my DxD politics course, we all come from different parts of the world, and we bring that experience to our discussions. For example, my classmate from Portland thinks about the subject of echo chambers on social media differently than my classmate from rural Illinois. While I can’t pinpoint an exact moment where my assumptions felt challenged, I can tell you that every class I leave, I learned a different angle on a topic that I thought I understood.

What’s one lesson or skill from DxD that you now use in your daily life, whether in class, with friends, at work or at home?

A lesson from DxD that I use in my daily life is the willingness to engage in dialogue with people who may not share my views. For example, one of my best friends from home has different political views from me, but I have been more willing to dive into conversation about politics since I left and when I began the DxD course.

Was there a conversation, activity or experience in the course that stuck with you long after it ended? Why has it stayed with you?

Yes, in a recent class discussion, we were exploring the question of whether someone who voted differently than you on morally complex votes was still a good person. While it can seem like there is an obvious answer, the question brought up so many different perspectives and opinions from the entire class. The prompt stuck with me because I never talked about voting and politics with my friends back home, and as someone who loves dissecting politics, I was so glad I found an environment where I could feel comfortable exploring these types of questions.
