How has being a BearFIT instructor created a sense of community for you?

During my first weeks at WashU, I was no longer on a varsity team and was searching for community. I found it at the Rec Center with an incredibly supportive staff. Over time, I built strong friendships with other instructors and received mentorship from older instructors who helped me refine my skills. It’s a community where we support each other, whether covering a class before an exam or celebrating successes outside the studio.

Do you think being a BearFIT instructor has impacted your leadership skills?

Yes, it has. Leading a class requires strong communication, confidence under pressure, and the ability to motivate others. These experiences have sharpened my leadership skills and made me more effective in group settings beyond the gym.

What skills do you think you’ve gained/polished by being a BearFIT instructor?

I’ve developed: public speaking and presentation skills by leading classes with confidence; time management and organization to balance teaching with academics; adaptability and problem-solving when adjusting workouts on the fly; and motivational skills to energize a group and create a positive environment.

What drives you to inspire others?

What drives me most is seeing people surprise themselves with what they’re capable of. Fitness has been one of the most grounding and confidence-building parts of my college experience, and I want others to experience that same sense of empowerment. When someone tells me that my class helped them de-stress or reset during a busy week, it reminds me why I love teaching—it’s about building confidence and community one workout at a time.
