The next stop on our tour of St. Louis restaurants took us to a regular stop for Chancellor Martin and his family – Turmeric, a pan-Indian restaurant and bar located on the Delmar Loop. Giving it glowing reviews, the Martin family invited me to tag along on their weekly Indian food night to check it out. Turmeric’s flavorful food and chill atmosphere lived up to all their hype.
Just a few blocks away from the Danforth campus, the Delmar Loop is a great place to explore the local food scene and try new cuisine. Down the street from WashU’s off-campus Loft Apartments, Turmeric is the perfect restaurant to frequent with your friends and is a great choice to take your family when they come to visit. Turmeric offers delicious lunch specials that come with enough food to feed two people per dish. Overall, the restaurant is affordable for both lunch and dinner.
Chancellor Martin and his family love Indian food and were excited to introduce me to their go-to dishes. We decided our best option for tasting the Martins’ large list of favorites from Turmeric’s expansive menu was to eat family style and share a bit of everything! I highly recommend doing this if you come with a group like we did.
There was more than enough food for all of us to eat leaving lots of leftovers to savor later. My favorites were the chicken tikka masala with rice and all the different naan options that came in the bread basket. The menu is large and can be overwhelming if you’re not familiar with Indian food. I suggest trying the basics like the chicken tikka masala or the chicken curry with an order of naan. But also be adventurous and add on one of the platters or samplers that include some of the more unique Indian food items. Don’t forget to add a speciality drink and dessert to your order. The Chancellor doesn’t eat desserts, which was fine by me – it left me more of them to try!
Reservations are not required, but are recommended due to the smaller dining room. If you don’t have time for a full sit-down meal, Turmeric is also great for Door Dash or pick-up.
Lunch hours: 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday.
Dinner hours: 5-9:30 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday, and 5-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday.
Turmeric is closed on Mondays.
As the Spring semester begins, take a chance to visit Turmeric. You won’t regret it!
