Offices and departments to address specific complaints 

Academic-Related

Students who have academic-related complaints should consult the policies and processes established by the relevant School as set forth in the Bulletin or, if applicable, their degree program handbook.  Students are encouraged to contact the relevant School officials identified in those policies.

Student Conduct

Students who wish to file a complaint against another student alleging a violation of the University Student Conduct Code should contact the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. Once a student complaint is filed, if a determination is made that a student will be charged with a violation of the Code, OSCCS will facilitate the investigation and hearing process as set forth in the Code. 

Discrimination and Harassment

The University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy applies to all faculty, staff and students.  Formal and informal processes to address student complaints of discrimination and/or harassment are provided in the Discrimination and Harassment Policy.  If students have questions or concerns about discrimination or harassment, they are encouraged to contact the Discrimination and Harassment Respondent Coordinators from the Office of Institutional Equity identified in the policy.  They may also submit a complaint to the Washington University Reporting Hotline.

Sex Discrimination and Harassment and Title IX

The Gender Equity and Title IX Compliance Office is responsible for overseeing investigations and hearings related to student complaints of sex discrimination or sexual harassment.  Processes vary depending upon the status of the person accused of sex discrimination or sexual harassment (student, faculty, or staff) and are available on the GETIXCO website.  Students wishing to file a complaint should contact GETIXCO with any questions or concerns related to a complaint of sex discrimination or sexual harassment.

Bias Report and Support System

Washington University in St. Louis values diversity, inclusion and human dignity, and strives to foster an environment in which all community members are respected and able to take part in academic, co-curricular and social activities.  If you have witnessed an incident of hate, bias and/or discrimination involving a student, reports made be made to the BRSS Team.

SAFE Reporting (Washington University School of Medicine)

Report concerns regarding the mistreatment or unprofessional behavior in the learning environment at the School of Medicine through the SAFE Reporting site. Reports can be made anonymously.

Registering a Complaint Related to Distance Education

Washington University in St. Louis has been approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). NC-SARA policy (SARA Policy Manual Version 24.1 July 1, 2024) provides for the resolution of complaints resulting from distance education courses, activities, and operations provided by WashU to students who participate in such courses outside of the state of Missouri (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, but excepting California, which is not a member of NC-SARA). Under NC-SARA Policy Section 4.5 (Process for Resolving Complaints), students are asked to seek resolution of complaints first through WashU.  If the complaint is not resolved, distance education students should contact the Missouri State Portal Entity:

Registering a Complaint with the Higher Learning Commission

Washington University in St. Louis is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Complaints regarding Washington University can be submitted the HLC via the HLC website.
