Why does City Year hire WashU students?

There’s a real enthusiasm and curiosity from WashU students when I meet them at career fairs. They’re prepared, thoughtful, and excited about giving a year of service which makes them stand out immediately.

Our ideal candidates are mission-aligned, adaptable, and able to build relationships across differences.

What makes WashU students stand out?

Even though we don’t have a site near St. Louis, WashU students are eager to take what they’ve learned and implement it in a new environment. They bring adaptability, a growth mindset, and strong relationship-building skills, qualities that make them effective tutors, mentors and team members in our program.

What qualities do you look for in students you recruit?

One of the biggest things is finding someone who is mission-aligned. We look for people who have a growth mindset, are adaptable, can build relationships, and empathize with others from different backgrounds.

How can WashU students connect with City Year before graduation?

Definitely stop by and say hello at the Career Expo, visit our website, connect on Handshake, or complete an interest form. Once a student indicates they’re a WashU student, it automatically sends them to me, and I reach out with more information and a link to my calendar for a call. You can also connect on LinkedIn.

Why does City Year partner with WashU?

We love WashU and it’s one of our university partners. They offer scholarships just for alumni of our program, including application fee waivers and significant scholarship money for the Brown School for social work and social policy in addition to the Olin School of Business for an MBA.
