Olin Business student leads with focus on values, service
The John B. Ervin Scholars Program had a profound impact on M.J. Brown’s experience at WashU. Drawn to the university because of the program’s focus on leadership, community service, diversity and academic excellence, Brown found a community that aligned with his values. The program’s support and opportunities were crucial in shaping his academic and personal growth.

Gaelen Clayton
McKelvey Engineering student loves being part of a team, on the field and in the classroom
Gaelen Clayton’s involvement with WashU women’s soccer significantly contributed to her personal and academic success. As a midfielder, she played a pivotal role in the team’s 2024 Division III national championship victory, demonstrating leadership both on and off the field.

Justin Xu
Biology student keeps people in focus while pursuing a career in medicine
Justin Xu’s leadership in student clubs deeply enriched his WashU experience. As co-founder of the WashU Kindness Club and Club Pickleball team, he built community and mentored peers. His role as community service director for the Congress of the South 40 taught him the value of collaboration and empathy. These experiences, combined with academic work in community psychology, shaped his passion for service and prepared him for a career in medicine.

Joshin Kumar
Engineer is working to protect us from the next pandemic
Joshin Kumar utilized the Sumers Rec Center to enhance his health and well-being during his PhD journey. Engaging in gym workouts, swimming and long-distance running, he developed discipline, consistency and dedication. This physical regimen not only improved his fitness but also positively impacted his research and overall life. Kumar emphasizes that a healthy body and mind are foundational to success, a principle he now advocates to those around him.
